GM to unveil new Silverado, Sierra trucks in December

General Motors will introduce its next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-sized pickups at a media event Dec. 13 in suburban Detroit, the automaker said today.

The unveiling of the redesigned trucks at Michigan Motion Picture Studios will come a month before the 2013 Detroit auto show, when the trucks will make their public debut. That will allow GM to make a big splash without competing with another of its big introductions: the next-generation ChevroletCorvette, planned for Jan. 13, the evening before the start of the auto show's media days.

GM released a teaser photo of the jewellike projector-beam headlamps on the redesigned Silverado. Spy shots of the truck released by GM and others show the pickup sporting a beefier, taller front end and more chrome.

"The bold exterior design of the new Silverado reflects the enhanced capabilities of the truck," GM said today in a statement. A GMC spokesman confirmed that the Sierra also will be shown at the Dec. 13 event.

The company wouldn't specify a launch date for the redesigned trucks, saying only that it will begin production of the Silverado next year. Both pickups are expected to go on sale by summer.

GM's share of the full-sized pickup market has slipped as rivals have launched fresher offerings. GM introduced the current Silverado and Sierra in the fall of 2006 as 2007 models, which makes them the oldest full-sized pickups in the segment.

Ford Motor Co. introduced the current version of its F-150 for the 2009 model year and overhauled the engine lineup for 2011, adding two V-8 engines and its turbocharged V-6 EcoBoost powertrain. This month, Chrysler Group is rolling out a re-engineered Ram pickup that features stop-start technology and other innovations to achieve 25 mpg in highway driving.

Through September, Ford sold 463,733 F-series pickups, up 11 percent from a year earlier. GM has sold 298,200 Silverados, up 1 percent, and 112,181 Sierras, up 5 percent. Ram pickup volume rose 20 percent, to 213,593.

GM will display both redesigned pickups at the Detroit show, which promises to be a busy venue for the automaker. The redesigned Corvette, the seventh generation of the iconic sports car, and the next generation of its full-sized pickups are among GM's most anticipated launches in years.

Cadillac, GM's luxury brand, will show the ELR plug-in hybrid sports coupe at the Detroit show.

Last month, GM showed the new Silverado to Chevrolet dealers at a national meeting in Las Vegas. Also in September, Buick-GMC dealers got their first glimpse of the next-generation Sierra at a Detroit-area meeting.
